Fairwood Common fighter station began operations in June 1941 FC85 commemorates that with a 1940s-themed event. There will be wartime aircraft, including Spitfires (you can book a ride in one on Sunday via our website) and at least one Hurricane (the first type to serve here) and other WWII period and other aircraft will be flying during the day. On the display ground there will be period costumes (dress up and join in) re-enactors, period military and civilian vehicles including steam engines and buses. There will be a wide range of stalls and displays of period material, artefacts and information about the aerodrome and its part in the war and the community, plus food and drink stalls, book and print sales. Emergency services will bring vehicles and stage demonstrations, RAF and cadet forces, museum and archive services will attend and we will have a special visit on Sunday by His Majesty the King's representative, the Lord Lieutenant and other dignitaries.
